Senior Renee Alcala was clear-headed and confident going into the regional meet. Her confidence was rewarded with advancing to state for the fourth time in her high school career.

“Going to this regional meet, I knew that the team had worked a lot on the relays and executing the perfect races to be able to get the regional title,” Alcala said. “So we all went into that meet really confident, knowing that we were going to place high and have a lot of points.”

Renee had competed in the 200 medley relay, 100 backstroke, along with the 200 medley relay and the 400 freestyle relay. She earned a bronze medal in both of her individual events and gold medals for the relays. She advanced in all events to the State Meet.

“Region is such a big deal in the swim world, like it’s a make it or break it,” Alcala said. “There’s no second chance. So my nerves were definitely through the roof. But at the end of the day, we were all able to do what we wanted in advance to state.”

The four-time state qualifier is doin what she can to help her team in her final high school meet this weekend.

“I’m gonna miss it when I’m done with the state meet,” she said. “I really enjoy it.”
