Sports Journalism Bootcamp

Incoming 7th-12th graders, Register Now

June 10-12, 9 a.m.-noon

Campers going into 7th-12th grade will spend three days immersed in what it takes to become a multimedia sports journalist. Professional sports writers and photographers will visit with students each day as they dive into the tips and tricks for covering sports from every angle. Each day will be packed with hands-on activities where young journalists will get a chance to put the lessons into action.

Each day a professional in the sports media field will speak with campers about their experiences on the sidelines and in the press box. Meet professional journalists who spend their days at Major League Baseball fields and NFL stadiums. They will offer tips and tricks that will help the middle schoolers and high schoolers have fun and stand out amongst their peers.

The camp will be under the direction of Megan Ortiz, Kingwood Park journalism adviser. Ortiz is in her 15th of year teaching. She is a former professional journalist, who covered the NBA, NFL and college football before beginning to teach. She has worked for the Houston Chronicle, The Dallas Morning News, San Antonio Express-News, The Des Moines Register and New York Newsday.

Cost is $100, which will include a tshirt and some journalism necessities. Register online today. Spots are limited!

Summer Media Camp

Incoming 4th-8th graders, Register Now

July 8-10, 9 a.m.-noon

Campers going into 4th-8th grade will be challenged to explore 21st Century journalism by telling stories through various mediums. Projects will include writing, photography and multimedia. Students will be grouped according to ages to create work they are proud to showcase on the final day. Professional journalists will visit each day to talk to the campers and tell them about their careers. The professionals will also give the young journalists tips and tricks to creating great journalism. Team competitions will be scattered throughout the week as the award-winning high school journalism students create an environment packed with fun and learning.
