The girls cross country team’s goal is to win regionals and go to state. To put this plan into action, they will continue to have consistent practices and push each other.
”I think the team’s strengths are communication and pushing ourselves together and just getting through the hard days as a team,” senior Sophie Sullivan said.
Every morning the girls cross country team arrives at school at 6:15 a.m. to practice. Some days they have after school practice too.
The girls cross country runners said sticking together will help them succeed this season.
“I love them, they are so funny, we struggle together, we run together, we laugh together, it’s so much fun,” senior Emma Adams said. “I really think that they make it better, and I don’t think I’d be able to do it on my own.”
Freshman Eva Grunz said coach Cody Cook’s speeches before practices have been memorable and helpful. As she has adjusted to high school training, she said there is one quote she will always remember from Cook, which is “run if you can, walk if you must.”
Grunz said it’s a good motivation to keep going even if you’re a little tired. She said he has taught her that if you have enough energy you should keep running, but if you genuinely cannot keep running – such as a cramp or injury holding you back – then you should walk.
With all levels of runners coming together this season, Sullivan said the team’s strengths are communication and pushing each other. One way the team does that is by pack running. Grunz said it has helped push her.
“I really love pack running,” Grunz said. “I think that it’s very beneficial to have people around you to push you, if you want to walk or take a rest they will encourage you to keep going.”
