The girls and boys swim teams placed first overall at their district meets on Jan. 25. Thirty-eight swimmers qualified for districts this year. Every girl who raced qualified for the Region Meet, along with 12 boys.
Girls coach John Dissinger said his team’s strength during the District Championships was its depth.
“We got three or four people in the top eight for every race,” Dissinger said.
Junior Elena Amos was the girls Swimmer of the Meet and stood out as a team leader. She qualified for Region in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.32, the 100 backstroke with a time of 58.88 and in both the 200 medley relay (where she swam butterfly) and in the 200 freestyle relay, which she anchored.
Amos said her goal for the Region Meet is for the team to win first place, and for her to break a record along with make it to the State Championships.
Prior to the district meet, the girls made a promise to their coach to actually do their full warm up and warm down. They credited that to helping their performances.
“Winning as a team always brings us joy, and the fact that we all made it to the next round is really fun,” Amos said.
Boys swim and diving coach Greg McLain said the boy senior swimmers’ leadership really stood out during the district meet. The veterans on the team encouraged and communicated with the newcomers to keep their nerves down and let them know it was all okay if they didn’t perform as well as they wanted.
One of the senior boys who stood out was senior Gabe Fabrizio. Fabrizio qualified for region in his 100 fly with a time of 55.3 seconds,100 back with a time of 55.82, as well as the 400 free relay and 200 medley. He ended up placing first in his 100 back and second in the 100 fly.
Despite advancing to region, Fabrizio did not perform as well as he hoped during the district meet, but he was really proud of the team as a whole.
“We had really good teamwork because we were all encouraging and kind to each other after our races,” said Fabrizio, who hopes to set new personal records in the 100 fly and 100 back during the Region Meet..
McLain said that Kingwood Park’s swim competition is getting a lot better, but the teams hope to place as high as they can during the Region Meet and qualify for as many swimmers as they can for State. The teams will compete at the Region Meet at the New Caney natatorium on Feb. 7-8.
“Everybody thinks swimming is an individual sport, but it’s really not, it’s a team sport,” McLain said.
