When students arrived at school on Monday, they were surprised to see many of the lights out and feel no air conditioning. An electrical issue had the school running on generators.
Sophomore Colten Clemens said the lack of air conditioning was the worst part as students continued with their normal classes and schedule. Students created fans and alternate ways to stay cool as they also tried to wave off the new smells that appeared without AC.
Some classes were too dark or too hot to the point that they either had to relocate to the cafeteria or move into the hallway while waiting for CenterPoint Energy to fix the issue.
Although most students and staff throughout the day found this inconvenient and uncomfortable to deal with, many adjusted and made it work. The phone lines were also down, but some students were still checked out by their parents. Seniors were off campus all day at their Senior Picnic.
“I’m having a really good day with the power being out because you kids are being wonderful,” Medina said. “The seniors aren’t here. I mean, it’s not really affected my day horribly. I’m not uncomfortable.”
Since the power wasn’t fully restored until 5th period, the lunch lines were reduced to four lines consisting of two chicken nugget lines and two different sandwich lines – one ham and the other peanut butter and jelly.
Freshman Addison Cecil said she didn’t mind the air and power being out for most of the day.
“It was pretty fun,” Cecil said. Cecil said the biggest struggle for her with the power being out was that “it was hot, and it smells very bad.”
