Almost 30 years after “Happy Gilmore” was released in theaters, Netflix finally released its sequel – the 13th movie that Adam Sandler made with Netflix.
In the first “Happy Gilmore,” the IRS is repossessing the house of Happy Gilmore’s grandma (Frances Bay). Happy, a hot-tempered hockey player was first introduced to golf to take his “swing talent” and earn the money needed to get his grandmother’s house back. The film featured Sandler (Happy Gilmore), Shooter McGavin (Christopher McDonald) and Chubbs (Carl Weathers).
“Happy Gilmore 2” is an absurd comedy with a heartfelt underdog story. The movie begins with main character Happy Gilmore still connected with golf. Instead of kicking things off with a bold direction, the movie falls back on old references and familiar jokes.
What made the movie stand out was a lot of comedy in the movie. The highlight of the movie were the characters because they included a lot of cameos, such as Eminem, Travis Kelce, Bad Bunny, Bryson Dechambeau, Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy.
“Happy Gilmore 2” fails to recapture the charm of the original, however. The jokes feel outdated and forced. Comparing the two movies makes the contrast clear. I feel like “Happy Gilmore” is better than “Happy Gilmore 2” because it was unpredictable or unexpected. “Happy Gilmore 2” kept repeating the same joke over and over.
“Happy Gilmore” is known for classic comedy and for its originality, wild humor, with an unexpected mix of golf and hockey. On the other hand, “Happy Gilmore 2” leaned heavily on nostalgia and repeating jokes from the original. In the end, it wasn’t a terrible movie, but I think it was overhyped.
