Sophomore Brooklynn Cooper walks into her sculpting class, with her supplies ready. She sits down, listening to instructions. The class is calm and quiet, a perfect environment for her to continue working on her sculpture. This is it, the class she’s been waiting for all day. Art is what she loves to do more than anything.
Cooper is an imaginative person. She takes sculpting classes and finds joy in art. She works especially with pottery and clay, and she specifically likes the art of smashing ceramic and piecing it back together, otherwise known as kintsugi.
“I like doing different types of mediums of art,” Cooper said. “I find sculpting specifically fun and an interesting challenge to take on at school. I think it’s a unique skill to have, and it sounds impressive when I say to my friends, ‘Hey, I can sculpt!’”
Besides sculpting, she also takes Physical Education and Spanish 1 this year. Cooper took these classes to have a pretty smooth and easy sophomore year, so it wouldn’t be as stressful. She has had an easy time adjusting to her schedule and her new electives.
“I picked these classes so they don’t overlap with each other,” Cooper said. “I like to have a free schedule so I can focus on work, while also enjoying personal time with my friends.”
One thing Cooper wasn’t expecting when she first walked into her classes was the fact that she knew a good amount of people in each class. She has at least a friend or two every period.
“I was surprised,” Cooper said, “I walked into my classes expecting to have a fresh set of classmates, but I recognized a pretty good amount of people. I’m glad I can have someone in each class to help me if necessary.”
Although Cooper loves art, it is not what she wants to pursue in life. She wants to figure it out when she is closer to graduating. Cooper would just rather have art as a hobby rather than a full-time deal.
“I know that as the years go by I will still have a space in my heart for art,” she said. “It’s a hobby I’ve had for years, and I will never be ready to let it go. So, even if I decide to be a doctor, or a scientist, or something completely out of my league now, I will always have a special place in my heart for art.”
