Water bottles have evolved through many years, from Gatorade, Hydro Flasks and Yetis to Stanleys, Owalas and HydroJugs. (The real question is: why does everyone suddenly switch bottles every few years?)
Gatorade Gx Bottle: Throwback to 2019 when these gatorade bottles were the only thing on my Tik Tok “for you” page. The pods, the colors, and just how customizable they were made them feel unique. The pods could flavor water however you wanted, and you could mix and match them. This made drinking water more fun, especially for athletes and students who wanted something different from regular bottles. From 2020 to 2023, they stayed popular because they were easy to carry, convenient, and looked cool when shown online.
Hydro Flasks: Classic, cute and sticker filled water bottle. We all had one of these. Hydro Flasks reached peak popularity during 2019-2020, driven by the “VSCO” aesthetic back in 2020. Representing an eco-friendly but still trendy aesthetic. The popularity started to slowly fade around 2021 as consumer preference started shifting towards other things like Stanleys or Yeti.
Yeti: The Yeti phase was less about stickers and more about durability. From around 2019 to 2022, Yeti bottles were known for being super strong and keeping drinks cold forever. They weren’t always the fanciest bottles, but they were reliable. If someone had a Yeti, you knew they meant business when it came to keeping their water cold all day.
Stanleys: Typical bottle that everyone carries around. Stanleys were established in 1913 but exploded in popularity during 2023 and to this day, they are still pretty popular. Stanleys became very useful due to the fact they are a 40oz bottle with a handle to carry it, they have a narrow base for car cup holders and the company drops vibrant colors and designs that make them even cuter.
Owala: Owala bottles also became a big trend around late 2023. Their design is different because you can sip from a straw or chug from the same lid, which people thought was pretty genius. They also come in fun color combinations that make them stand out. If Stanleys are the popular kid everyone recognizes, Owalas are the cool, slightly underrated bottle people start switching to.
HydroJugs: Lastly, Hydrojugs are the newer trend starting around 2025, and they are basically the “serious hydration” bottle. They’re bigger, come with sleeves and straps, and are great for athletes or people who want to drink a lot of water throughout the day. Carrying one almost feels like a workout by itself, but at least you’ll stay hydrated.
A lot of these trends start because of social media. Once something appears on TikTok enough times, it suddenly becomes the thing everyone wants. One day it’s Hydro Flasks, the next it’s Stanleys, and before you know it there’s another new bottle taking over everyone’s FYP.
At this point, water bottles are more than just something you drink from. They’ve become part of people’s style, personality and daily routine. And based on how trends work, there will probably be another “must have” bottle soon that everyone suddenly decides they need.
