This year the varsity volleyball team has been gearing up and preparing for the new season. Over the spring, many of the teammates played together as part of a club team for Kingwood Revolution. In addition, the team scrimmaged other teams at the school during the summer
“That really helped the team build their connection and build the setters’ connection with the hitters, and during the practices we are being more intentional on what we need to work on,” senior captain Krisslyn Boyles said.
This year, the team’s theme to push them to the district championship is “iron sharpens iron,” meaning that the players try to push themselves and their teammates to improve each other and the team as a whole.
There are four seniors on the team this year: Boyles, Emily Pavel, Emily Petruncio and Angie Gonzales. Last year, Boyles earned most valuable player on the team and 1st team All- District. Pavel won District Honorable Mention.
The seniors are trying to step it up and make an impact this year, especially by improving the communication of the team.
“The seniors have been doing a great job at keeping an open mind of communication all of the time, they are really inviting,” coach Sarah Stafford staff. “[They] are really on top of just leading the team and also leading by example. I think we also set a level of respect with the underclassmen by still taking responsibility for things.”
The team’s current record is 4-10. The first game to start districts is Sept. 17.
“I think the team this year is amazing, they are so so sweet and have tremendous potential to be great athletes and volleyball players and they’re just fun to be around and I’m just excited to spend this year with them,” Stafford said.
