After teeing off on the 12th hole of the Brenham Invitational, freshman Campbell Zurovec watched as her ball rolled into the hole, scoring a hole in one on the par-3. At the same time, the boys golf team was at the West Texas Shootout in Concan, Texas, where they set a new school 18-hole record with a 1-under-par 287.
The boys’ overall score was 587, led by junior Cory Case. The girls’ overall score was 689, led by freshman Lilly Raymond. Both teams finished in first place this past weekend.
“The wins this weekend were a great boost to both programs,” coach Angela Chancellor said. “We had some cancellations from the weather early in the fall and this spring, so being able to grind out a win at this point in the season is really encouraging.”
With the addition of crucial freshmen, the teams are preparing for districts and hoping to make a playoff run.
One addition to the boys team includes freshman Parker McGehee, who helped the boys at Concan by finishing ninth individually with a 157 after 36 holes.
All members of the boys team finished in the top 10 individually, helping break the record with one stroke under par. Case won the meet, shooting 140 (1 under par) over 36 holes with eight birdies and two eagles. Sophomore Seth Ferguson (3rd place), senior Cole Mayon (5th place) and senior Wyatt Rodriguez (6th place) also contributed.
“I would say it was different compared to all the other tournaments because the vibe was different,” Case said. “This tournament was so much more fun than everything else, and we played really well so it made it 10 times better.”
At the Brenham Invitational, the girls team consisted of mostly young athletes, which Chancellor said will benefit the team in the future. Four of the girls finished in the Top 10, including Raymond (4th place), sophomore Gracie Ingalls (5th place), sophomore Jamie Ingalls (6th place) and Zurovec (7th place).
A definite highlight was when Zurovec surprised herself when she scored her first hole in one.
“I was just like no way, because I had just told somebody before, maybe I’ll get a hole in one,” Zurovec said. “Then I look up from my shot and it’s rolling into the hole.”
Although Zurovec was proud of the accomplishment, she was more proud of the team’s victory. Zurovec describes the team’s dynamic as close and welcoming, which has helped the connection and overall bond of the young team.
The majority of the boys team consists of returning players who enjoy being around each other and competing together. They also have high expectations for the season. A year ago, Case and Mayon competed at the State Championships.
“Our culture is very good,” Case said. “We’re very close as a team, and I think that helps us play better.”
