Meet the Students of Character

Each year the senior class votes on two students who individually exemplify ideal characteristics of a graduate. This year, Madison Staggs and John Howk were selected.

What are your plans for next year?

“I am going to run track at the University of North Carolina-Wilmington and major in psychology on a pre-law track.”

What does it mean to you to win Student of Character?

“I was really surprised and very happy because I feel like it shows that people notice that I try to be nice to everyone. It just makes me feel happy that people think of me that way.”

What was your reaction to winning?

“I was in stats class, and I didn’t even know people were voting on that because I wasn’t there the day they voted. So I was really surprised. I just felt like honored that people think of me when like all those good qualities come to mind. So it made me really happy.”

Who is someone you look up to and try to model yourself after?

“Honestly, my mom, because even when things are rough and stuff like that, she’s so outgoing. She’s always nice. She’s always willing to help me. She’ll bring me lunch and things like that. So I always try to treat people the way you want to be treated, and I feel like my mom’s a great example of that.”

What have you tried to do at Kingwood Park that you think made you a name your classmates thought of when this award was voted?

“I always try to be nice to people, like even when I’m not feeling 100%. Be just super outgoing and check up on my friends. like if I know they’re not feeling 100% and just be like an encourager.”

What are your plans for next year?

“I’m going to Texas A&M and studying construction science.”

What does it mean to you to win Student of Character?

“It means a lot. To win Student of Character means that I know that I’m doing something right and that it feels really good to make my parents proud. My mom my whole life has said that character is who you are when no one else is around. So I’m glad that I’m able to get that message out and that other people are recognizing that.”

What was your reaction to winning?

“I was kind of shocked. I didn’t know I was going to win it. A couple people had told me that I might get it, but I was very excited.”

Who is someone that you look up to and try to model yourself after?

“My mom and dad, really. I’ve never seen my mom do the wrong thing.”

What have you just tried to do at Kingwood Park that you think made you a name your classmates thought of when the award was voted for?

“I just tried to do the best that I could every single day and try to treat everybody with the same kind of respect that I wanted to be treated with.”
