The first thing I notice when I walk into English teacher Marissa Manfred’s classroom is the smell of warm pumpkin spice that makes the room feel cozy and welcoming right away. It is a small detail, but it says a lot about the kind of teacher she is. Dressed in all black every day without fail, it’s just part of what make her class so unique.
Contrast to her clothes, Ms. Manfred is one of the most bubbly and kind teachers I have ever had. She brings an energy into the room that makes it easy to learn, even on days where the class is easily distracted. No matter how loud we get, she stays patient and understanding.
You can tell that Ms. Manfred truly loves her job, and it shows in everything she does. In any lectures or assignment, she makes sure to put cute little cartoon pictures or add a video so it is never boring. Her love for Edgar Allen Poe is inspiring. Over the past year, she has helped me improve on my writing so much and given me more confidence in my work.
Not only has Ms. Manfred helped me become a better writer, she is someone I know I can talk to about anything. We usually talk about my family or cheer, which makes her class feel even more personal and inviting. She has had my sister both this year and last year, and since she also did cheer in high school, it makes it even easier to connect with her.
Ms. Manfred is more than just a teacher, she is someone who truly cares for her students and wants to see them succeed. She has made a lasting impact on me, and is the kind of teacher I will always remember.
** This story is part of a Teacher Appreciation series where students write about a staff member who has had a significant impact on them during high school.
