With the 2026-2027 season already halfway through, the league has now a good idea on who are the potential candidates for the MVP award. While some candidates are ones we’ve seen in the race before, there are a couple fresh faces with strong cases for the award.
Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City Chiefs
Prior to the season Patrick Mahomes has won two NFL regular season MVP awards and three Super Bowl MVP awards. He has also won three Super Bowls, with an MVP award in each of the three championship victories. This season, Mahomes still looks similar to his previous seasons. He is currently putting up 1,800 yards with completion percentage of 66.1. If the Chiefs can get on a win streak, he’s definitely a top candidate.
Josh Allen, Buffalo Bills
Josh Allen has been playing like his old self recently, putting up his similar stats from last year when he won MVP. He won MVP in a year where compared to the other teams, he didn’t have star receivers. The fact he’s doing this without a Pro Bowl- level weapon shows his stats are even more impressive than other system quarterbacks. If the Bills keep playing well, he can win his second straight MVP.
Baker Mayfield, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
After bouncing from team to team, Baker Mayfield finally found his home in Tampa. After a couple of good years as a starter, he’s putting up MVP-level stats. Tampa is 1st in the NFC South and Baker’s been the main reason why. He’s playing with confidence, making smart throws and showing that chip on his shoulder energy again. A lot of people counted him out, but now he’s proving he can lead a winning team. If he keeps this up, he could easily end up in the MVP conversation by the end of the season.
Drake Maye, New England Patriots
Drake Maye is showing why he was a top pick. Even just in his sophomore season, he’s looking calm in the pocket and making big-time throws. He;s got the offense moving and keeps getting better every week. You can see the confidence growing with every game. If he keeps balling like this, he might sneak his way into the MVP talks too.
