To look for a fresh start and meet new people, juniors Allison and Melanie Fixmer transferred from Kingwood High School to Kingwood Park.
The varsity swimmers have been swimming since they were 6 years old.
“I really lock in,” Allison said. “When I’m swimming, everything else kind of goes away.”
The girls said transferring has been great for both.
“The people (at Kingwood Park) are so much nicer,” Allison said. “Not saying the people at Kingwood weren’t nice, it’s just a different type of nice.”
Girls swim coach John Dissinger said he has seen great improvement and effort since the girls came to Kingwood Park. He said the girls often lead their lanes, and Dissinger looks forward to seeing what’s ahead for them in the pool.
Dissinger said something that stood out to him was the girls are seen at all the team’s community service events, spending free time together to help other people.
“They are just great human beings,” Dissinger said. “Kind to all and super hard workers.”
Although both of the girls swim, they are in different types of events. Allison swims quicker, more speed-based events. Melanie swims longer events. The girls make sure they support each other in each meet.
“(Allison) is always there for me,” Melanie said. “We cheer each other on when we can.”
Allison often focuses on the 50 and 100 free, while Melanie swims the 200 and 500 free. Through all the success the girls have had together in swimming, both make sure they keep a strong relationship through the sport.
The girls use each other as motivators to push them through all the troubles.
“It’s like I have a swim buddy,” Allison said. “Somebody I can stick with.”
