Imagine you’re walking, the air cool and crisp. Fall leaves sway to the ground in shades of orange and brown, and you’re bundled in your favorite hoodie and thick blanket to keep you warm.
Listening to a melody that calms your spirit. The world around you feels transformed, as if the scenery itself is shaped by the art flowing through your ears. In that moment, music becomes more than sound.
It becomes a living, breathing form of art. That’s how most people feel when listening to music. It’s a refreshing feeling that everyone craves during their day.
Music is a daily stress reliever, it can chemically improve your mood. When listening to a song that you feel speaks to you, tiny dopamine sensors go off and send signals to your brain making you happy. Or in other words enjoy the music you’re currently listening to.
When phones were allowed in schools, everyone had their favorite songs playing while walking down the halls or to class, blocking out the random conversations they didn’t care for. Now students have no way of being able to muffle out the crowded hallways.
The art of being able to listen to another person’s work isn’t appreciated enough. People often speak down on music they don’t usually listen to, and while it’s understandable not to enjoy every genre of music – that music is still someone’s art and it represents someone’s creativity, something that took time and dedication.
Making music with an entirely different type of determination, I’ve heard musicians have taken years to even produce their songs and albums. An album that has a lot of hidden meaning is, for example, a song that everyone has listened to at least once.
“Pumped Up Kicks” by Foster The People – this entire song is the sad truth about how common school shootings have become. Most people didn’t even recognize the hidden message because it’s covered up by such an upbeat rhyme and catchy lyrics.
Another song that has a deeper meaning that it portrays is “Semi-Charmed” Life by Third Eye Blind. There is an upbeat chorus that plays throughout the entire song and you wouldn’t even know it’s about having an addiction to crystal meth and how shallow life had become. There’s so many examples of songs that have a deeper meaning than the surface level lyrics that they sing.
On the other hand, music can ease people’s anxiety Lots of students listen to music while they study or workout. The effect that music has on you is crazier than you might think, when you notice how people’s moods change.
Listening to music can chemically improve your mood and boost dopamine sensors in your brain, which makes it seem obvious you should to listen to music when you’re in a bad mood or maybe you just need something to lift you up.
Next time you’re listening to your favorite song, maybe listen to the lyrics more closely. It might have an entirely different meaning than you thought.
