The boys golf team kicked off the first day of their district tournament at their home course, Kingwood Country Club, on Tuesday. The second round teed off at 9 a.m. today.

The top team, consisting of sophomore Cory Case, junior Cole Mayon, sophomore Seth Ferguson, senior Kasen Ferguson and junior Wyatt Rodriguez, took an early 14-stroke lead over Lufkin at the end of Day One.

In order to qualify for Regionals the team has to stay in the top two spots.

“If all of us shoot below an 85 we’ll get into Regionals because we have a 14-stroke lead,” Seth Ferguson said.

Case led the team with a 77. Rodriguez and Mayon both shot a 79. Rodriguez’s first round was one of his best of the season.

“Super proud of Wyatt’s play today,” coach Angela Chancellor said. “He was able to start low and keep it manageable. He had a great attitude all day.”

Chancellor said in order to secure a spot at regionals the boys team has to keep their scores low and play smart golf.

“We just need to play like we normally do and eliminate big numbers,” Rodriguez said.

Chancellor said she looks forward to seeing the final numbers roll in at the end of the day, which she hopes leads to a district title.

“I’m really curious to see when they all five come together and they all five give me that number,” Chancellor said. “They can get low.”
