Chappell Roan is one of the most well-known, up-and-coming music stars, whether it be for her amazing music or her recent cancellations and controversies. Unlike many younger music stars and celebrities today, she did not grow up in the spotlight. I think that is the sort of appeal of her music. She built her career from the ground up, and that is something that can be so inspiring to young people today, especially people who may want to explore music as a career later in life.

Kayleigh, otherwise known as Chappell Roan, released her first song on YouTube in 2014 called “Die Young.” This song is genuinely so amazing, especially because she was so young when she first released it. The song talks about the pressures of being a teenager and how sometimes life can get confusing, dark, and depressing. It delves into the themes of teenage suicide, wanting to die young and losing yourself to substances. The song takes a turn, though, and ends with not wanting to die young, instead wanting to live and find love.
This song opened up a whole new pathway for Chappell because it led to her creating an entire album called School Nights. It was released on Sept. 22, 2017, and it was the album that started her career. My favorite song of the album is called “Bad for You.” It follows a girl who knows she’s bad for her partner, yet she still loves it. The entire album has a constant theme of love and loss, which bleeds into her more recent music like “Feminominon” and “Casual.”
After School Nights, she released multiple singles like “Bitter,” which is a slower, quieter song from 2018 that talks about how people can turn bitter over time because of bad experiences. Also in 2018 was the release of the song “School Nights,” which talks about feeling young and relating love to children’s activities like dares, flowers and bubblegum. After these two releases, she took a two-year gap before releasing two more songs.
The first of these is called “Love Me Anyway,” and it talks about how, despite the lapse of time, two people can still love each other. It is one of her fastest, upbeat songs, and it is genuinely one of my favorite songs that she has ever written. I think it is so slept on by so many people. The other song she released is called “California,” and it has a completely different vibe from “Love Me Anyway.” “California” is a melodramatic, slower song, and it discusses things like disappointing or letting people down and the desperation of coming home.
These two releases boosted her monthly listeners by over a million people, and as a result, allowed her to make more music. In 2022, Chappell released a total of five songs, all of them making an appearance on the album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess. My favorite of the five, and also the slowest, is called “Casual.” The song talks about a relationship that she seems to view as more than the other person sees it as, calling it just “Casual.” I love this song because it talks about the risks of getting into a relationship when one person wants more than the other. Not only are the lyrics amazing, but the song gets more aggressive as it goes on, ending with her shouting at the other person, or possibly the world.
The next year, not only did Chappell release three more songs, but she also released her most popular album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess. These three songs – “Kaleidoscope,” a slower, sadder song, “Red Wine Supernova,” an upbeat, bold song and “HOT TO GO,” her second most popular song – propelled Chappell Roan to the top of the charts.
The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess became Chappell Roans most popular album, being released in the middle of 2023. Some of the other songs on the album included “Femininominon,” “After Midnight,” and “Super Graphic Ultra Modern Girl.” One of my favorites of these is “Feminiominon,” which is surprisingly one of her lesser played songs. It starts off slower, talking about getting cheated on and the sadness that comes after. However, the chorus gets much faster, giving an empowering, feminine feeling. All in all, it is an amazing, powerful song about feminism.
Finally, her most recently released song is called “Good Luck, Babe!” which was released earlier this year. This song is currently at the top of her charts, having almost 900 million streams. Part of the reason for that is the catchy beat and the vocal flips that Chappell is known for, but the other part is for the beautiful lyrics that go to that same beat. The song talks about an unrequited sapphic romance, where Chappell is telling the other girl that, in the future, she will still think about her, saying that she should have stayed with Chappell. The song touches on themes of romance, like many of her others, but it is one of the most desperate songs that she has written, almost bordering on frantic or hysterical.
All of Chappell’s music is unique, and her earlier songs show her growth to her newer songs, allowing listeners to hear her growing confidence over the years. If you haven’t already, I would highly recommend that you listen to her music because she has music for everyone.
