The anime adaptation “Chainsaw Man” premiered around three years ago while the manga came out around 2018. For me “Chainsaw Man” has always been incredible. The animation is always solid and you can tell MAPPA’s animators put a lot of work into it. Each episode has a different outro, new music and animation. That takes a lot of effort. After the first season premiered, the anime kinda disappeared. There was barely anything in the media about Season Two, let alone a movie. So when a few months ago, MAPPA studios dropped a trailer on us the whole fandom was kinda taken by surprise; but, most of all, people were ecstatic to hear we were getting a movie and so soon.
For those who don’t know, “Chainsaw Man’s” plot involves main character Denji, the Chainsaw devil, Power the blood fiend, Aki the devil hunter and Makima the boos of the whole devil hunter operation. The main antagonist of the anime is the Gun devil. He’s after Denji’s heart, which contains what he needs in order to turn into Chainsaw Man. In this movie, the Gun devil’s successor Bomb devil is the one after Denji’s heart. This is were the animation really ramps up.
Oh my goodness, did my expectations get blown out of the water. The animation for some of the fight scenes between Reez (Bomb devil) and Denji (Chainsaw devil) is very reminiscent of Jujutsu Kaisen Season Two, also produced by MAPPA. The fight sequences are absolutely magnificent. “Chainsaw Man” has never been afraid to test different animation styles and try new things. I think that’s what made the movie different from others. There were multiple frames where the art styles would change completely and it was fantastic every single time.
