For weeks, Student Council planned and promoted a food drive with a twist. They made announcements during lunch to donate food cans in order to get your teacher or principal pied at lunch. On Jan. 27, the day finally came and the cafeteria bustled with noise.
Students stood in the lunch lines waiting impatiently for food, others talked about their day or finished schoolwork. When the announcement was made that the teachers and principals would be pied, Student Council students began preparing the pies (plates with whip cream) and the staff members got ready. Trash bags covered the adults from head to toe and they wore goggles on their faces.
Student Council sponsor Alyssa Grant organized the event by publicizing posters around the school, passing out flyers and posting on social media. Grant started the “Pie Your Teacher in the Face” event to have a fun alternative to have students donate to food drives. The teachers and principals with the most donations were the ones selected to be pied. There were at least two staff members pied at each lunch shift.
Student Council collected 60 cans of food during the drive.
When the plate of whip cream hit the teachers’ faces, the cafeteria had mixed reactions. Many students celebrated, while others weren’t as entertained. They kept on dining on their meals – it was pizza day.
Head soccer coach Christian Boehm was pied during D lunch. He volunteered after receiving an email asking who wanted to participate. As soon as Boehm stepped on the stage in the cafeteria, many of the students began cheering his name.
“I wasn’t really nervous up there,” Boehm said. “It’s exciting, being a part of something like this.”
Student Council treasurer Aiza Sheikh was one of the students who got to pie the teachers. Sheikh is eager for new students to join Student Council, and encourages them to join in on the fun.
“We have more ideas coming soon,” she said, “to make student donations relevant, getting students into school spirit and to help out in the future.”
