In October 2022, famed Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn became the director of operations at DC. He was given the task of starting the new rebooted DC cinematic universe with the highly anticipated new “Superman” film. Fans have been starved for news on the movie for some time ever since the man of steel’s suit was revealed in a promotional shoot on May 6 of this year. But now we have some real expectations as the teaser trailer has finally been released.
The trailer itself was teased in its own trailer Dec. 18 to some sparse criticism, mostly about the color grading (looked bright and washed out) of the shots shown and how it reminded people of low budget CW network shows like “The Flash” and “Green Arrow.” However with the advent of the full trailer debuting it seems that the problems mentioned were fixed.
The opening shot of the trailer is of the titular character Superman played by David Corenswet falling from the sky somewhere in the arctic, he seems to have been injured in a fight. This sequence is intercut with shots of Clark Kent performing his job at news station “The Daily Planet,” showing us our first look at Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. We cut back to Superman as he is approached by Krypto the superdog in his theatrical debut. Superman then asks him to go “home” before we cut to multiple scenes of Superman saving people and fighting what seems to be a giant monster.
One particular scene shows Superman being yelled at by a crowd, perhaps giving a clue as to what the major conflict of the film may be. In this sequence, we are shown a brief look at multiple highly-awaited characters like Lex Luthor, (played by Nicholas Hoult) Guy Gardner, (played by Nathan Fillion) and Mister Terrific (played by Edi Gathegi). While many people are excited for these inclusions, some also think they may serve to bog the movie down and take focus away from Superman and Lois Lane, but overall people are excited to see these characters on the silver screen.
The trailer is capped off with a kiss between protagonists Clark and Lois as the music swells and ushers in the release date for the movie, July 11, 2025. So far the reception to the trailer is overwhelmingly positive and many fans are taking to social media to voice their anticipation for the film’s release. As a massive Superman fan myself, I am beyond excited for this movie as it seems James Gunn really understands the appeal of the character and isn’t afraid to lean into the more silly aspects of superhero stories. Watch out for Superman: Legacy in theatres July 2025.
